London Beach Rugby

Doom Bar London Beach RugbyIn August, Incentive FM participated in the inaugural Doom Bar London Beach Rugby tournament held in the famous setting of Covent Garden. The event was organised by City Sports Management Ltd and was the brain child of Myles Waud who attended a similar event in the south of France a few years prior. The tourist mecca location enabled a large amount of spectators to stumble upon the tournament and enjoy the festival or rugby. Ten corporate teams from predominantly property and law took part in the prestigious event, including one of our key clients; Jones Lang LaSalle.

Incentive FM played a pivotal role in the organisation of the event. We project managed the complex operation of installation and removal of the tournament’s 120 tonnes man-made beach. This was installed overnight starting when access was permitted at 8.00 pm on Thursday night and removed between 8.00pm and midnight on Saturday night whilst the market was still in full swing.
The majority of our team had never played this format of the game, therefore took us a while to find our feet and dust away the cobwebs. Having won one, lost one and drawn 2, we qualified in 3rd place in our league. We then went on the play and lose to a very skilful Lloyds RFC team in the quarter-final.

After the success of the event, City Sports Management Ltd plan to hold similar tournaments in Cardiff, Edinburgh and London during 2014. This will coincide with the build-up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup promoting the sport in these major UK cities, which Incentive hope to be an integral part of.

The standard of rugby was very high and good sportsmanship was shown throughout the tournament. Let’s hope we do one better next year or preferably bring the trophy back to Loman Street.
